Peru: The Inca Trail

Welcome to Cuzco, the Imperial City of the Incas! Located high up in the hills, this city was once the center of a vast empire that stretched across South America. The fusion of Inca and Spanish colonial architecture gives the city a unique feel. Upon arrival, remember to take it easy and drink plenty of water to adjust to the high altitude (11,155ft/3,400m). Make sure to check the hotel notice board for details of the group welcome briefing. Get ready for an adventure of a lifetime in this historic city!

The next day, take your time strolling around the Plaza de Armas, soaking up the vibrant atmosphere and watching the world go by. Make sure to visit the Sun Temple and the Mercado San Pedro for a taste of the local culture. Venture out of town to see the ancient ruins of Sacsayhuaman or explore the breathtaking Sacred Valley. For the more adventurous, try paddleboarding, mountain biking, via ferrata, or zip-lining. Don't forget to pack and weigh your duffel bag for tomorrow's Inca Trail adventure and keep your passport handy!

Today, you’ll transfer to the Sacred Valley and start the Inca Trail trek at Km82. Passports at the ready, follow the Vilcanota River, passing through cactus gardens and corn fields, taking in the stunning Nevado Veronica mountain range. Your campsite for the night is near the hamlet of Huayllabamba, after visiting the impressive Inca ruins of Llactapata.

Get ready for an epic day - This is the most challenging section of the trek, but you've got this! Trek through stunning cloud forests and meadows, then tackle the highest point of the trail, the Warmihuañusca (Dead Woman's) Pass, at a breathtaking 13,829ft (4,215m). After a steep descent, you’ll set up camp in the beautiful Pacaymayu River valley at 11,811ft (3,600m), where the incredible views will make it all worth it!

Embark on an easier climb today, as you start your journey past the historic ruins of Runquracay and up and over the Runquracay Pass (12,894ft/3,930m). From here, the Inca Trail transforms into a well-defined path of flat boulders. Be amazed as you venture through the rainforest, passing by the incredible Inca tunnel and Sayacmarca ruins. For a breathtaking experience, you’ll spend the night at a stunning campsite located on the ridge above the Phuyupatamarca Inca site (12,073ft/3,680m) to enjoy the beautiful sunset and sunrise views.

You’ll start the day by descending the Inca steps, a 1.2mi (2km) stone staircase with stunning views of Vilcabamba range and the river below. After visiting the ruins of Wiñay Wayna, trek through cloud forest to Inti Punku, the Sun Gate, where you’ll catch the first full view of the breathtaking Machu Picchu. Arriving in the late afternoon, avoid the crowds and enjoy unobstructed views of the ruins. After some classic photos, take a bus down to Aguas Calientes for a well-deserved rest. Tomorrow, you’ll be back for a guided tour of Machu Picchu.

Hotel Inti Punku El Tambo (or similar)

Today you’re up early to beat the crowds and reach the iconic ruins of Machu Picchu. After a winding bus ride to the site entrance, spend the morning exploring one of the greatest wonders of the world, surrounded by breathtaking mountain views. Your knowledgeable guide will reveal the secrets and stories behind this ancient marvel. In the afternoon, board a train back to Ollantaytambo and a private bus to Cuzco, taking in more beautiful scenery along the way.
