Northern Territory Holidays
Ancient culture, adventure, wildlife, and natural beauty abounds in the Northern Territory. It spans from Australia's Red Centre in the very middle of the country right up to the tropical Top End. It’s undeniably most famous for the mighty Uluru (Ayers Rock), a 600-million-year-old rock formation to the south of the region. And while Uluru and neighbouring Kata Tjuta are definitely must-dos for any Australia holiday, there’s so much more to discover...
Discover the beach-side city of Darwin, swim in the natural waterholes of Litchfield National Park, go on a wildlife safari in Kakadu National Park, cruise or kayak through the breathtaking Nitmiluk (Katherine) Gorge, and experience Aboriginal culture first-hand in Arnhem Land or the Tiwi Islands. Down in the Red Centre you can experience Alice Springs, an authentic outback town, via hot air balloon, mountain bike or on one of many hiking trails. When to Go to the Northern Territory
From the red desert of the south to tropical bushland in the north, weather and seasons in the Northern Territory vary greatly. You can visit year-round. The Top End has two distinct seasons: the dry season and the tropical summer. The dry season runs May-Oct and is the most popular time for outdoor activities such as hiking, camping, cycling, and an array of outdoor events and festivals. The tropical summer (Nov-Apr) is the best time to visit to see wildlife, flora and fauna, and full-flowing waterfalls.
Where to Go in the Northern Territory
The Northern Territory consists of two regions; the Top End and the Red Centre. The Top End consists of the tropical capital city, Darwin, untouched Arnhem Land, and the stunning national parks Kakadu, Nitmiluk and Litchfield. In the Red Centre you’ll find Tennant Creek, Alice Springs, Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park and Kings Canyon. To get a feel for the Territory, we recommend visiting both regions because they drastically contrast with each other; from the rich red desert of Uluru all the way up to the green and tropical city of Darwin. It’s possible to drive between the two, although this can take a few days and travels across Outback terrain. Otherwise, you can fly from Alice Springs, which is near Uluru, to Darwin in around two hours. From Darwin, be sure to explore the surrounding area, which promises incredible tropical landscapes and unique wildlife.
