Exploring the USA with United Airlines

United Airlines offers unrivalled access to the USA, flying non-stop from London Heathrow to Washington, DC, its US hub. This makes the nation’s capital the perfect jumping-off point for an adventure across the States. But first make sure you allow enough time to fully explore everything Washington, DC has to offer, with history and cultural highlights around every bend. It will take at least a day to visit the impressive memorials that line the National Mall and the Potomac’s Tidal Basin, which is at its prettiest when the spring cherry blossom is in full bloom.

Take advantage of the museums and galleries that make up the unrivalled Smithsonian Institute – without breaking the bank. Entrance is free and that includes the National Zoo too! Elsewhere, the Newseum has rightly established itself as the top attraction in the city. Here, in the home of the Watergate scandal, budding reporters can try their hand at anchoring the news. For an even more immersive mission - should you choose to accept it - the Spy Museum offers top-secret briefings and code-breaking challenges. Just try not to break cover.

Before you leave, fewer things could be more American than eating a hot dog and watching the Washington Nationals play baseball - not least of all because the stadium affords magnificent views of the US Capitol Building and Washington Monument, which together dominate the skyline of this low-rise yet sophisticated city.

Now all you have to decide is where to visit next. With direct onward connections to 68 other American airports, with United Airlines you’re spoilt for choice...

Boston, Massachusetts

As one of the oldest cities in the USA and the gateway to New England, Boston is bursting with history, culture and nature. Be sure to walk the 2.5-mile Freedom Trail, visit the Bunker Hill Museum for some insight into the American Revolution and sports fans will love the iconic Fenway Park, where the Red Sox will show you just how baseball is done. If your city break ends here, fly back to the UK on United Airline's new non-stop Boston route. Otherwise, the adventure continues...

Austin, Texas

This quirky state capital has a dynamic music and arts scene. While most people flock to legendary 6th Street for live music and bars, we recommend heading to Rainey Street for a more chilled-out afternoon. Houses converted into bungalow bars are well-stocked with craft beers and
great cocktails, while nearby food trucks keep you fed on tasty tacos.

New York City, New York

New York has probably starred in more movies than any other city in the world. You can now relive a classic, by starting your day with ‘Breakfast at Tiffany’s’ at the jewellery store’s Blue Box Cafe. You’ll be set up for some serious shopping on Fifth Avenue – or explore nearby Central Park, lined
with world-famous museums and galleries such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Miami, Florida

Miami is a perfect mix of city life and beach downtime. Its Art Deco District boasts a fantastic array of 1920s and 30s architecture, with colourful buildings and beautiful period hotels on famed Ocean Drive. Catch rays on one of the many beaches, try your hand at deep-sea fishing and feast on the catch of the day at a waterfront restaurant.

Las Vegas, Nevada

The city pulses with showbiz dazzle, thumping nightlife and 24-hour casinos. Balance the energy of the Strip with a visit to the Grand Canyon: enjoy a float trip down the Colorado River; follow iconic hiking trails; or take to the sky and be wowed by the views. Camp for a few days before returning to one of Vegas’s vast themed hotels.

Charleston, South Carolina

Take a trip through time on a walking tour of charming Charleston, where more than 2,800 historic buildings span eight architectural styles, including colonial, Georgian, Gothic Revival, Victorian and Art Deco. Head out of town to the delightful resort city of Myrtle Beach at the centre of the Grand Strand,
a 60-mile string of beaches for you to discover.

Denver, Colorado

The Mountain Parks system in the foothills of the Rockies spans 14,000 acres, almost the size of Manhattan. Watch a concert at the natural Red Rocks Amphitheatre, spot buffalo at Genesee Park or navigate the hair-raising Lariat Loop trail to visit the Buffalo Bill Museum. For unmissable panoramas, drive the highest paved road in North America to the summit of Mount Evans.
