The first thing you'll notice about Saigon is the sheer quantity of scooters driving around the city's streets. Aptly nicknamed "Motorbike City", Saigon can initially be a little daunting, especially when crossing the road for the first time. The best thing you can do is watch how a local does it, and copy.
For an enthralling and indeed educational experience, take a half-day tour to the Cu Chi Tunnels, about an hour's bus trip out of the city. This preserved network of tunnels is where the Viet Cong hid out during the Vietnam War. If you're not claustrophobic, have a go at crawling through a narrow, 100-metre long tunnel to experience what it was like for the soldiers.
For a great bargain, head along to the Ben Thanh Markets and try your hand at haggling. Here you'll find everything from 'designer' label clothing, suitcases, arts and crafts, jewellery, footwear and much more. Start your haggling at about a third of the asking price to ensure you get a great bargain.
