Top Places to See
As Australia’s second largest state (seven times the size of the UK) it can be difficult to know where to start your holiday in Queensland. For holidays to southern Queensland, the most popular entry point is Brisbane, the state’s growing capital and the perfect starting point for a road trip north along the beaches and villages of Australia's Sunshine Coast, or south to the Gold Coast. For Tropical North Queensland holidays, the laid-back town of Cairns is a great entry point, with nearby Port Douglas, Palm Cove and Trinity Beach all ripe for exploration. It also boasts convenient access to the Great Barrier Reef and the Wet Tropics Rainforest, the only place on the planet where two World Heritage sites sit side by side.
Cairns and the Great Barrier Reef
Cairns, in the Tropical North, is perfectly located for reef and rainforest adventures at the top of Queensland. Spend lazy days in the city chilling out and relaxing in the sunshine, shopping in the beachwear stores and sipping coffees in the cafés. Don’t miss a trip out to the Great Barrier Reef, an underwater world of colourful corals and tropical fish, perhaps by helicopter, semi-submersible vessel, on a cruise, or on a diving and snorkelling excursion.
Further north you’ll find Port Douglas and the nearby Daintree, the world’s oldest living rainforest. Far away from the trappings of life, this ancient land offers plenty of natural experiences including jungle surfing, horse riding and wildlife watching in Cape Tribulation. The waterfalls, forests and lakes of the Atherton Tablelands, accessed from the picturesque village of Kuranda, offer further adventures, as well as a unique insight into the Indigenous culture of the region.
The Sunshine Coast
Just north of Brisbane, the Sunshine Coast is home to secluded beaches and a string of welcoming towns and villages, including the boutiquey, seaside getaway of Noosa, where you’ll find a selection of stylish seafood restaurants and trendy cafés. Popular with whale watchers, it’s worth spending some time in the Sunshine Coast to get under skin of the region. It’s not just about the beaches either – hike the Hinterland and the Glass House Mountains, explore the galleries and artists’ workshops, pay a visit to Australia Zoo, owned by the late Steve Irwin, and watch for wildlife in Noosa National Park.
When to Go to Queensland
They don’t call it the Sunshine State for nothing; the vast majority of Queensland experiences an average of eight to nine hours of sunshine a day, meaning you’ll find great weather within the state year-round. Queensland is at its hottest during the summer months of December, January and February. The winter months of June, July and August are hardly winter though, with average temperatures sitting between 15 and 25°C. In addition to fantastic weather, Queensland is also a busy state with a revolving calendar of annual events.
